Introducing: Diego e Damiano Barale at the Cellar Door Shop

Based in the village of Barolo itself, Diego e Damiano Barale is a historic family estate with roots in the region dating back to the seventeenth century.

Today the winery remains firmly family-run, producing traditionally styled wines from some of Barolo’s most respected vineyard sites, including Cannubi and Bussia. This exciting new branch of the family took the helm in 2012 with a commitment to producing outstanding vintage-specific wines from select parcels.

Their Estate

With vines covering around 8ha of land between the towns of Barolo and Monteforte d'Alba, the estate combines careful, sustainable vineyard management with classic, low-intervention winemaking,. This results in wines that emphasise elegance, purity and a strong connection to the heritage of Piedmont.

The brothers practise organic viticulture to best showcase their terroir, alongside slow, natural vinification- though, you won't see certification on their bottles. To preserve the distinctive aromatics, they favour traditional, slower winemaking styles with fermentation taking place in steel tanks and wines aged in French tonneaux, in their ancient, vaulted cellars.

Farming With Nature
Though not formally certified, the Barale estate utilises organic farming practices across their sites, with minimal chemical intervention throughout their vineyards. Traditional, more sustainable farming techniques are also applied estate-wide, both to preserve soil health and maintain the unique flavours and aromas that are a trademark of their terroir.

The More, The Merrier
The work that the Barale Brothers do in their vineyards centres around maintaining balance with the surrounding ecosystem. Much of their focus is around protecting historic vineyard sites such as Cannubi and Bussia and in tandem, the long-term health of old Nebbiolo vineyards.

Waste Not, Want Not
In maintaining a more traditional approach to winemaking, their cellar practices are naturally more conscious and circular. Long ageing and restrained winemaking mean that the delicate expression of each vineyard is maintained, with minimal oak uasage contributing purity and elegance.

Social Responsibility:
As a multi-generational, family-owned business, they are intrinsically rooted in their local community. Alongside making delicious wines, they are committed to preserving the cultural identity of barolo through long-term stewardship of historic sites.
