It is without a doubt that we adore our location here in the South Downs, with our rolling hills, distinctive chalk cliffs and stunning green vistas. The diversity of routes offered, even in our own home village, never gets old for us- from short strolls to long hikes, there's something for every mood, every fitness level and everything that the English weather throws at us. Of course, all of our hikes begin and end at our vineyard; we accept walk-in customers for a glass of wine every week from Wednesday-Sunday. Remember to follow us on AllTrails to see our favourite routes!*
This week, we enjoyed a short (three-turned-four mile) walk around Hambledon's surrounding farmland and woodland. In the height of summer, this was the ideal way to view the plethora of wildflowers growing around us, as well as the fast-growing crops in the local agricultural land.
Following a Hambledon Parish Council route, we began at Hambledon Vineyard, on the diagonal public footpath through our Windmill Down West Vineyard- which leads you to Hambledon Primary school and the beautiful, historic church at the heart of the village. Then, we continued up Speltham Hill, next to the People's Market, and took a right turn onto a public footpath in the National trust land behind.
With our unmatched navigational skills, we then walked up the steep slope to a beautiful vista across our village, and into the Hampshire South Downs. Unfortunately, this was the wrong direction. We did not realise this until we were past the point of no return. If you were to follow our route, you have a slightly longer route around Hambledon- however please be aware that some paths along this route have minimal accessibility, we took a wrong turn in some woodland and you do have to walk down a section of a busy road, which is not ideal, in my books!.
The real route, (also on our AllTrails and Hambledon Parish Council), skips the steep ascent (my knees would have thanked me the first time!), and continues straight ahead across a flat section of field, and at Jubilee Bench, you then follow the footpath up the hill, cross the road and follow the path along the boundary of Bury Lodge- a stunning 19th Century property set in lush, green parkland and located near the archaeological remains of a roman villa. Then, after crossing the road (taking care of the traffic), and there is a pathway through fields of horses- a lovely addition for horse-lovers like me!
Then, after passing through two paddocks, follow a winding footpath through some woodland, dotted with wildflowers, mushrooms and at the right time of year, wild garlic! As you descend into the village, why not enjoy a slice of cake at The Old Forge Tearooms, or visit the Stores for a browse and a coffee?
After exploring our beautiful village, go back through the churchyard, up the vineyard path, and stop in at Hambledon Vineyard for a well-earned glass of our Finest English Sparkling Wine, a Cheeseboard, or a lunch at our Cellar Door Dining experience?
*Please note, we can't give any indications as to the current state of access to the paths involved.
