British Summer Time, Vol #2: The Walk & A Drink to Finish

The ‘Walk and Drink’ is something solidified into British culture, in the same way that Sunday Roasts and the ‘cream or jam first’ debate are ingrained in the quotidian. Of course, this is not something specific to the summertime- it’s something as enjoyable on a crisp winter day when you’re welcomed with a roaring fire and an ale, as it is in the sunshine with a cold glass of English sparkling wine. Regardless of the season- it’s a pastime that we excel at here at Hambledon Wine Estate.

The Walk

The Route: We’re well-versed in local hiking routes here at Hambledon, but for other areas of the UK, take inspiration from the recommendations on the National Trust, Countryfile or National Trails websites. Our number one tip: always consider the company you’re in. Think about who you’re hiking with. Passionate hikers sometimes choose routes that feel a bit much for those who just want a relaxed day outdoors. If you know your group well, picking a trail is simple. If not, it’s always better to choose the gentler path.

Supplies: It’s needless to say that in the summer especially, bring plenty of water with you and keep hydrated- especially when working with rougher terrain in some parts of the country- it is always best to bring more than you need. Food is also a given (of course, if your drinks stop includes a lunch, emergency snacks should suffice)- for those committed to the picnic, read our previous article to see our favourite picnic picks to take with you. A map and compass are advisable for longer, harder treks and make sure your phone has enough charge in case of emergency.

The Drink

Whether it’s a well-deserved glass of wine, a cold beer at your local pub, a, or indeed a delicious soft drink to quench your thirst, this is not only a refreshment stop but a chance to slow down for a moment, relax, and catch up with loved ones.

There’s something special about this mid or post-walk pit stop; something that feels earned. When you’ve walked through rolling hills, woodland or coastline, picked blackberries on the way, spotted wildlife and local wildflowers, thrown a ball for your dog, played with your children, said hello to the sheep and the cows and stopped for a moment to take it all in. It’s a quiet moment of reflection and relaxation and the denouement to an idyllic day out- away from hustle, bustle and screens.

Our ‘Hikes in Hambledon’ are designed to start and finish here at our estate and we gladly welcome walkers to while away the subsequent hours on the sunny terrace with drinks and nibbles. Contrary to common expectations, we don’t just serve our English sparkling wine- in fact, we have an range of locally sourced beer and cider for those looking for a longer drink, delicious cocktails developed in-house, outstanding coffee from local roastery, Moon Roast, and an eclectic range of soft drinks from the likes of Hartridges and more.

But really, the tradition is one that is simple and mobile, one that can be enjoyed anywhere in the country and (mostly) at any time. It’s no secret that local pubs are struggling to stay open so even if you’re not drinking alcohol, a visit to a local favourite can make all the difference.

Indeed, the ‘walk and drink’ isn’t complicated: far from it. But often, simple is best.
