Hambledon’s Fuel - How Biomass will power our passion for Sparkling Wine

At Hambledon Vineyard, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do: it’s how we think, and act and it’s woven into every aspect of our winegrowing and winemaking activities.

There’s no universal agreed definition for sustainability, but for us, it means to think long-term and act in every way we can to ensure the balance and longevity of the ecosystem we integrate. This is a continuous practice and that truly needs to be bonded to a company’s mindset and DNA. That is why, today we were over the moon when our brand-new Biomass Heating System was installed. We couldn’t wait to share the news with the world!

Hambledon Vineyard is switching all its heating to biomass. And, as you can see, there’s nothing glamorous or beautiful about this systems, apart from the fact that it will contribute immensely to reduce our carbon footprint.

In our eyes, this is absolutely stunning, because it means Hambledon Vineyard will be able to use its vine prunings, the leftover wood that is left after pruning the vineyards during winter, to (through a very complex chemical process) fuel heating for our winery, offices, visitor centre and wine tourism facilities and other buildings, all on fully renewable resources from our own vineyards! For us this is truly being integrated into one’s ecosystem, where we close the cycle and let nature fuel our passion for wine.

We hope we can share this masterpiece of science with you soon enough. While you enjoy Hambledon’s tours and activities or while simply sipping on our sparkling wines, the energy you’ll see around you, will be powered by nature…. And by our absolute passion for wine.
